Ten-year-old India Opal Buloni goes to the Winn-Dixie supermarket for groceries and comes home with a dog. He is big and scruffy, he smiles with all his teeth, and she names him after the store.
Opal and her father, a preacher, have just moved to Naomi, Florida, and she doesn’t know anyone. Because of the dog she meets a librarian with a story about a bear, a man who plays guitar for the animals at the pet store, and an old woman the neighborhood kids call a witch. She also finally asks her father about the mother who left when she was three.
