FAQs
Most answers on this page come back to a handful of numbers: 6 to 9 business days for delivery, $3.90 shipping under $29.00 and free shipping from $29.00, and a 30-day return window that opens on the delivery date. Each answer below names the policy that holds the full rule.
Questions settled before ordering
Free shipping reached at $29.00
A book subtotal of $29.00 or more ships free, and below that the shipping charge is $3.90, counted after any discount and before tax. Two hardcovers, Corduroy at $9.96 and The Day the Crayons Quit at $9.98, total $19.94 and pay $3.90, while adding If You Give a Mouse a Cookie at $14.32 makes $34.26 with free shipping. The Shipping Policy has the details.
Delivery dates worked out from the order day
Payment made by 5 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday, makes that day the start, after which the warehouse needs 1 to 2 business days and the carrier 5 to 7, for 6 to 9 business days in all. An order placed at 3:40 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026 is delivered between Wednesday, Oct. 28 and Monday, Nov. 2. Federal holidays such as Columbus Day add a day, as the Shipping Policy explains.
Age ranges set by each publisher
The reading age on a listing, from Ages 2 to 5 for The Very Hungry Caterpillar up to Ages 10 to 14 for Hatchet, is the range the publisher gives for that edition. The adult choosing the book knows the child far better than any range does, and the Disclaimer explains why some middle grade novels deserve a look at the summary first.
Hardcover and paperback formats explained
Every picture book in the catalog is a hardcover, and every early reader and middle grade novel is a paperback, as the format line on each listing shows. The picture books for the youngest readers are hardcovers with paper pages, not board books, which the Product Safety page explains.
Gift orders sent to another address
The shipping address can differ from the billing address, so books bought by a grandparent in one state can go straight to a grandchild in another, as long as the delivery address is a street address inside the lower 48 or in Washington, DC.
Boxes followed after checkout
The tracking number located in the shipping email
On the day the box leaves the warehouse, at most 2 business days after the order counts, the shipping email arrives naming the carrier and giving the tracking number. For up to a business day the carrier may show nothing yet, and until the box ships, the Order Tracking page reports where the order stands.
A wrong address fixed within 6 hours
Customer service can still change the address when its inbox receives, within 6 hours of the order, a message that quotes the order number and gives the new address. Past that point the box may already be packed, and it travels to the address on the order.
An order cancelled within 6 hours
Cancelling is possible for 6 hours after the order goes through, and the money comes back as a credit to the card or PayPal account within 2 business days. Later than that, the books have to arrive first, and the Refund and Returns Policy takes over from there.
Problems sorted out after delivery
A book returned after a change of mind
Any book can be returned for any reason during the 30 days after delivery, including a duplicate present or a reader who already owns it, as long as it looks unread. For a change-of-mind return, the customer covers the postage back, the original $3.90 shipping charge stays spent, and no restocking fee is taken, as the Refund and Returns Policy explains.
The return address sent with the return number
The address arrives in the email that carries the return number, within 1 business day of the request, and it belongs to the distribution partner’s returns facility in the United States. Books mailed to the Greensboro office cannot be processed there.
Damage photographed within 15 days
A book that arrives bent, torn, wet, misprinted, or with the wrong title can be reported within 15 days of delivery, with pictures of the problem and of the shipping label. Customer service decides within 2 business days on a replacement copy or a full refund, and the book usually stays with the customer.
A box reported missing after a delivered scan
The Shipping Policy lists four checks, from the porch to the neighbors, and the last step is an email to customer service within 15 days of the delivered scan, after which a claim with the carrier leads to a replacement copy or a full refund.
Refund timing measured in business days
The credit goes out no more than 7 business days after the returns facility receives and checks the book, to whichever card or PayPal account paid. Banks and PayPal sometimes hold it for as many as 10 further business days before it appears.
The other format swapped in
When a listing offers a title in both hardcover and paperback, the copy can be exchanged for the other format, and a damaged copy can be exchanged for a fresh one. Any other change is a return plus a new order.
Payments explained at checkout
Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and PayPal accepted
Those five are the only methods at checkout, through the Credit Card option or PayPal’s own window. Apple Pay, Google Pay, gift cards, and checks are not accepted, as the Payment Policy lists.
The charge made at the time of ordering
The card or PayPal account pays the full final price at the moment of ordering, and a failed attempt can leave a pending hold that the bank usually releases within 3 to 5 business days.
North Carolina tax added to some orders
Only orders delivered to a North Carolina address show a sales tax line, which applies to the books and to the shipping charge, and at the time of writing orders going to other states carry no tax line.
