Three steps
The ages are the reading ranges publishers print for each edition. You know the reader best, so treat them as a starting point.
Picture booksHardcovers made to be read aloud, from The Gruffalo to Corduroy. The pages are paper, not board, so the youngest readers look with an adult nearby.See the picture books2
Early readersLeveled paperback readers such as Biscuit, Amelia Bedelia and Pete the Cat, for the first books a child reads alone.See the early readers3
Middle grade novelsChapter books and novels, Charlotte’s Web, Holes and The Wild Robot among them, for readers from 7 to 14.See the middle grade novelsReading lists

Before you order
Every book is new, printed on paper, and sold as its publisher made it. None comes with a toy, battery, magnet or small part. The Product Safety page explains the federal rules for children’s books.
Picture books listed from age 2 are hardcovers with paper pages, not board books, so the youngest readers should look at them with an adult nearby.
The ISBN-13 on each listing names the edition you get. Cover art can change from one printing to the next.
