Five short stories about two friends who could hardly be more different. Frog is cheerful and ready for spring. Toad would rather stay in bed. Frog gets Toad out of the house, Toad loses a button and blames everyone, the two go swimming and Toad doesn’t want to be seen in his bathing suit, and Toad waits for a letter that never comes.
The letter story ends with Frog writing Toad a letter himself, and a snail taking four days to deliver it. The sentences are short, the jokes are gentle, and Arnold Lobel’s brown and green drawings fill most of every page.
Paperback, 64 pages, published by HarperCollins as an I Can Read Level 2 book. Caldecott Honor Book. Suggested for ages 4 to 6.
