Nick Allen likes to liven up fifth grade, and his teacher, Mrs. Granger, loves the dictionary. When she says that people decide what words mean, Nick tests it. He starts calling a pen a frindle and gets his friends to do the same.
Mrs. Granger fights back with detentions. The word spreads anyway, through the whole school, then the town, then onto national TV, and Nick sees what happens when an idea gets bigger than the kid who had it. The last chapter jumps ahead ten years, and a letter from Mrs. Granger puts the whole fight in a different light.
