Esperanza grows up on her family’s ranch in Aguascalientes, Mexico, with fine dresses and servants. Just before she turns thirteen her father is killed, the house burns, and she and her mother leave for California.
It is the early 1930s, and the only work is in the farm labor camps. Esperanza has never swept a floor. She has to learn to work, to live alongside families who have far less than she ever had, and to care for her mother when she falls ill.
