Copenhagen, 1943. German soldiers stand on the street corners, and ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend, Ellen Rosen, have learned to keep their heads down. When the Nazis start rounding up Denmark’s Jews, Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be Annemarie’s sister.
The Johansens then help get Ellen’s family to a fishing village and across the water to Sweden, and Annemarie ends up carrying something important through the dark woods alone. The story is based on the real rescue of nearly 7,000 Danish Jews.
