A tiny caterpillar hatches on a Sunday morning and starts eating. On Monday it eats one apple, on Tuesday two pears, and the count climbs through the week until Saturday, when it eats its way through a pile of party food and ends up with a stomachache.
On Sunday a single green leaf sets things right. The caterpillar, now big and fat, wraps itself in a cocoon and comes out as a butterfly. Children count along and push their fingers through the little holes cut in the pages wherever the caterpillar has taken a bite.
